Black flies vs No-See-Ums (also referred to as black flies) see review
There is a picture of a black fly in the container. Definitely a small black biting fly you find especially around horses and I am not sure, but seems to me they come a bit later in the summer. My experience has been that this doesn't work on that type fly....they are relentless on a horse and hard to find a fly repellent for a horse that works on this little fly. So these tend to bite uncovered legs, ankles, arms. If in shorter pants I have found using Deep Woods Off works for about 2 hours and then you have to keep respraying. BUT at least here in Michigan, there is the "other" biting black fly that is usually called "No-See-Umms" (so tiny you can't see them). Not all areas get them. These have a short season right around mid-may to the first week of June (thank goodness for short). These guys will bite and you don't even know it until blood comes trickling down from bite. And they are fussy in that they seem to bite only certain people. I being one of them (my husband not) and I am very allergic to the bites. NO repellent, I tried them all in the past, has worked for me except using beekeeper hats., which are very hot to wear. Last year I tried No Bite Me and no black fly bites!! They love the head and face so I dab a bit behind my ears, along around the rim of the hat, neck.....just dabs, don't gob it on. And when those "no see-ems" arrived this year, that repellent works just as well as last year. No more trips to urgent care for allergic reactions to these bites. Can't comment on mosquitoes, because I usually use the Deep WoodsOff simply to easily cover a large area....arms, legs, etc. where mosquitoes seem to bite & we don't have a huge mosquito population. I wanted to clarify the two kinds of black flies. Hope this helps.
