Read This! WOW!
I recently switched over from an offset smoker to a Traeger pellet smoker. I was used to getting more smoke with the offset smoker than the pellet smoker so I decided to give the 12" smoke tube a try. I read some reviews on how people are lighting it and after several attempts although successful I think this way is the best for me. I fill the tube inside the bag of pellets, then I pack them inside the tube like a pack of cigarettes. I just bump on the ground very lightly a few times to pack the pellets in there. I leave about 1 to 1 1/2" of room at the top so when I lay it down pellets don't spill out. I then stand the tube straight up and light it like a candle without a wick with a propane torch. If you light it in a non windy area it will burn like a candle for about 5 minutes. Usually it goes out on its own but if I feel like blowing it out after about three minutes it will still burn like it should. Once the flame is out I lay it inside the smoker over the grate. I was VERY impressed on how this thing smokes. I found myself saying Choo Choo once the meat was on. This thing smokes like a train. There was literally blankets of smoke coming out of the smoker door. The tube smoked consistently a little over 4 hours as advertised without having to blow on it or mess with it at all. It was literally set it and forget it till it burned out. If you are interested in the torch I bought it at Harbor Freight (also sold on Amazon) and the propane bottles they sell at Walmart. If this review helped your decision please vote as helpful. No I don't get paid by Amazon I just like knowing I helped someone.
Update 12/21/15
Since my initial review I went back to cooking on an offset smoker. Although the tube smoker does work as advertised, in my opinion wood pellets just don't put out enough flavor that real wood or chunks over charcoal produce. If you're not happy with your pellet smoker producing a heavy smoky flavor then this probably will not help much. Also if you're not using it on a pellet smoker then it will probably will not stay smoking unless you have adequate ventilation. This update was not meant to confuse you. If you like mild smoke and want a little more smoke than your pellet smoker provides then this will help. If you are into heavier smoking then I would pass.
