When I received this package, I was in the middle of making some food. I opened the box and plopped the bag down on the table until I was ready to free the wormies. Didn't seem to be any signs of life at that point. I read the directions while I waited on my pizza. It said they'd be half dead upon arrival, so I ignored them while I ate. Suddenly my boyfriend asks, "Is that one of the worms?" It was wriggling on the table, hell bent on freedom! Somehow it had gotten through the super tight knot at the top. I'm the kind of girl who'll pick up a garter snake and chase my little brother with it, but I squealed when I saw that wormy on my table! At that point I peered through the bag, which was illuminated from the other side by the window. The wormies were alive and ANGRY! They looked like zombies trying to climb the interior of the bag. They could smell my pizza, I'm sure of it. I rescued the escapee and threw them in my compost pile before they stole my pizza. They've been happily munching dead leaves and turning them into plant-nourishing poop for about two weeks now. Happy with my purchase.
