I was initially a little skeptical of this, but it has been great for us. I hated the look of those big plastic bumpers that go on the side of the bed, but was still concerned about keeping my little one from falling out of bed. It's super easy to install. We have a memory foam mattress and I put it on top of the mattress cover, but underneath the fitted sheet. We have sheets with deep pockets, but I'm not sure that would be completely necessary. The mattress we have is 12+ inches thick and we had no problems getting the fitted sheet over the bumper. We have had no problems at all with it moving around, and I even tried getting it to move to see what it would do. My daughter sometimes will sort of snuggle up to it, but she can't roll over the top of it. I think it's made to fit the entire length of a toddler bed, but we have it on her regular full-sized mattress and have no problems. She just crawls in at the bottom of the bed where it doesn't reach so she can still get in the bed easily. Definitely a better option than those plastic gates. My mom has one of those that she uses when the grandkids spend the night and it's a pain. I'm glad that we decided to get one of these instead!
