Solid product. Decent Value. Buy the extra bands.
WARNING: This is a fairly long review. There is a TLDR at the end.
Let's talk about this thing. The Gorilla Bow is a simple device that its creators want to be used to supplement or even replace a gym full of equipment. Is it successful in this endeavor? With a few caveats in mind, I believe it can.
First off. If you are going to buy it, go ahead and purchase the second set of bands. The default set comes with a 10lb, 20lb, 32lb, and 45lb band. The extra set comes with 2 50lb bands, and 2 60lb bands. This is important because the bow itself really only holds 4 bands. You might be able to fit more, but I wouldn't recommend it.
The quality of the bar is excellent. They claim it can withstand 300lbs of force. I don't have any reason to doubt that, and I think it could likely hold more.
The bands themselves are also good quality. I've done squats, deadlifts, rows, pulldown and all kind of the heavier exercises and the bands have shown no signs of fraying or losing elasticity.
Are the exercises effective? The only exercise I wasn't fond of was the chest press. The default bands that come with it (107ish pounds I think) don't generate sufficient tension to make the chest press challenging enough. Instead, I do pushups by bracing my hands on the bands and resting the bar across my back. The tension keeps it in place.
Every other exercise was great. In addition to those push ups, I do overhead press, rows, lat pulldowns, squats, deadlifts, curls, tricep extensions, and even calf raises. The bow is versatile and is only limited by your imagination (and which bands you have. BUY THE HEAVIER BANDS).
Keep in mind that the bands are not necessarily a one to one comparison to traditional weights. It is important to experiment and find out which bands will generate enough force to put you in your desired rep range. Another nice feature is that the bands allow you to push to muscle failure without risk of dropping the weights on yourself.
In addition to the lacking band selection with the stock purchase, I only have two minor problems with this product. First, the bands themselves are not labeled. I know that the tension is variable, but some of the bands are the same color and I've dropped them and have to spend time figuring out which band is which.
The other issue is that there is no codified training regiment. The creators have left it up to you to figure out how to best fit this into your routine. I think it would have been much better if they had released a pamphlet or something that plays to the strengths of resistant band training. There are videos online, and you can purchase a book from them with a training regiment, but it doesn't seem fair to sell the instructions separately.
Customer service is also very good so far. I've reached out to the creators with questions here and there, and they have been very helpful; answering questions fully and promptly.
TLDR; Great product, works as advertised provided you buy the extra bands and take the time to learn how to adjust your movements to accomodate the strengths of the bow.
