Decent but could be better
I bought this from Best Buy since it wasn't available on Amazon yet and here are my preliminary thoughts: (see my uploaded pics in the product pics section) The Good: 1. Design - I love the design of this keyboard dock. It's very compact and nice looking. It has a dual color scheme, with a white upper layer with the keypad and a lower black layer. The keyboard itself is not full size, more like a netbook size (maybe 90% of full size). It's great for me since it allows it to be compact and fits the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in landscape mode, but it may be too small for those with large hands or chubby fingers. The Tab fits in the dock quite securely but does not lock down and if you tilt it forwards there is some movement (so you don't want to do that!). The angle is not adjustable, but is a good angle for using on a table and I often keep it in the dock when in lying in bed and think it'll be great for watching movies on a plane. It also has nice rubber feet on the bottom to keep it from sliding around a table top. 2. Build quality - I think this keyboard is very nicely built. It's all plastic and matte except for the glossy docking black area. No flex of any sort, and the keys feel good when pressed, much like a good netbook keyboard. 3. Utility (Shortcut keys) - There are a bunch of great shortcut keys that don't require the pressing of any buttons concurrently (like alt/ctrl/fn/etc.), so with one press you can do the following functions: back, home, apps, internet browser, email client, screen on/off, brightness +/-, mute, volume +/-, onscreen keypad on/off, voice search, search, task bar/settings. There are also arrow keys that are useful (since the onscreen keypad has no arrow keys). 4. Ports/jacks - There is an audio out (1/8") jack on the rear right end and a jack for the proprietary connector on the right side. The audio jack is useful so that you can have your headphones or speakers attached in a less bothersome location (otherwise the headphone jack on the 10.1 Tab is on the top of the device when in the keyboard dock). The proprietary connector jack allows the keyboard dock to serve as an all-purpose dock so that you can just keep it in the dock when not being used to charge it overnight. The Not So Good: 1. Initial plug n' play problems - I don't know what the deal is, but I had the hardest time getting this dock to work initially with my 10.1 Tab. I assumed it would work as a 'plug n' play' type device, but when I connected it it would show a 'clock' screen and pressing the home button would not get it to the home screen. And no matter what I did, including adjusting the 'input' settings in the control panel (it seems that either 'android keyboard' or 'samsung keyboard' work), made it work. And then it just started to work and has been fine ever since. I think probably what needed to happen is a power off/on after changing the 'input' settings. It seems to be a bug and hopefully Samsung will address it in an update. Nevertheless, after the initial problems it has been working great and I love having it. 2. Input lag - There is noticeable and disappointing key input lag with this keyboard, especially considering that it is a direct connection (not bluetooth) keyboard. Much of the time it is not that noticeable but sometimes becomes more prominent, but I'm not really sure what situations result in greater lag. Also, occasionally a key press will cause multiple inputs of that key. Rarely happens but annoying when it does. 3. No USB/HDMI ports - It would have been nice to have a USB jack in this dock since the 10.1 Tab doesn't have any full size USB ports but alas, it does not. Since Honeycomb supports USB host functions, it would be great to be able to directly connect a USB device to the keyboard. I don't really care about the omission of any HDMI type jacks since it's easier to wirelessly stream to your TV through a media server application. The Omissions that Some People May Care About, but I Don't: 1. No battery - It could be useful to have an integrated battery in this keyboard dock so that you could get additional charge for your Tab for those long plan trips. However, I don't care about this omission since that would likely add to the weight/bulk of this dock and since the 10.1 seems to have pretty good battery life to begin with. My Grade: 70/100 Conclusion - Although this keyboard dock has some performance issues (primarily input lag, although this may be more of a Honeycomb issue than with the keyboard dock itself) and lacks any USB jacks, it is nicely built and serves as an excellent dock and a highly functional keyboard.
