What would you do if you REALLY had nothing left?
Merriam Webster defines depravity as “a very evil quality or way of behaving”. You won’t know the true meaning of the word until you have reached the end of “The Body Reader”. As a voracious reader, this is not the first book I’ve read that describes what it’s like to be held captive by a madman. But it IS the first book I’ve read with that theme that makes every one before it seem trite and lackluster. Anne Frasier manages to take the reader into the dark with Jude Fontaine, and find out what it is like to be stripped of every part of humanity a person can possess. I have always been a fan of Frasier’s deeply developed characters, and Jude Fontaine is no exception. She triumphs over insanity in the physical sense, but Frasier shows us the long term effects of being stripped bare of everything but the most primal of instincts. I don’t like to write my reviews like a synopsis of the book, to me that steals the joy of the story from the reader. Instead I like to strongly urge readers to let an author take over their soul for a brief while, and for those of us that glean great joy from exquisitely written psychological suspense, we know that is the effect of a finding a masterpiece like “The Body Reader”. Leave your soul in the darkness for awhile. Feel what it’s like to be held captive physically and spiritually. Listen to this tale of pain laced with gut wrenching glimpses of what was stolen from Jude Fontaine. Worry that it could just as easily be stolen from you. Cheer for her as she tries to escape the fear and inability to function. Wonder if YOU could try that hard to live. Cry with her as she fails to overcome the trauma to her mind. Understand what it’s like when death would be a welcome release from the torture of being kept alive. If you are already a fan of Anne Frasier, this will be a new treat to be savored. If this is your first Anne Frasier book, you will be in a rush to read all the others. Five star seems inadequate to rate an experience that will leave you breathless and afraid of the evil in the world.
