Excellent collar for walking an athletic dog.
Excellent collar. This is power steering for your dog. When used responsibly, it is much less likely to injure an uncooperative dog's neck than a normal colllar or a choke collar. You can teach a dog to walk at heal with this collar and, right away, the dog essentially learns to correct himself when he forgets and tugs at the the lead instead of walking at heal. The dog figures out fast which one of you is the dog and that it is up to him not to pull on the lead or he will make himself less comfortable. Also an added bonus, when on the dog the collar looks like a normal collar, in contrast to the Draconian-looking pinch collars. Pinch collars are also safe and humane to use, but using a pinch collar in public draws unsolicited criticism from well-meaning strangers who are not familiar with published studies on the pinch collar vs use of the choke collar. I have had two StarMark collars since 1999. I lost the first one on a huntIng trip, and replaced the lost collar with a second StarMark collar in 2013 purchased on Amazon. I use it daily to walk my 60 lb lab and, as of mid-year 2019, the collar is in like-new working order. I strongly recommend this collar to anyone that wants to walk a well-behaved dog. The collar provides a humane and safe way to handle your dog without injuring the dog. You will be able keep him out of traffic, away from other dogs, out of peoples’ faces, and under control anywhere you take the dog, and look like you know what you are doing. This is an excellent piece of gear. UpdateJuly 2019. Note in response to a handful of negative reviews, primarily complaining of trouble they had adding or removing the links that make up the collar, and one or two complaining about the collar coming appart. There is a “trick” to adding or removing the links. When necessary to adjust to fit your dog, the links snap apart easily with a firm twisting motion to allow adding or removing a link. You also add a link with a twisting motion. The process is very simple when you get the hang of it. The learning curve is short for most but for a few its apparently also a steep. Be patient. Tools should not be necessary unless you have trouble with your grip strength and cannot put a firm grip on the links to snap them in place. If the links are connected correctly, this is a very strong and durable collar that is easily able to handle my 65 lb lab with my dog’s intense athletic power. If the collar comes apart, either a link is damaged or a link was not connected correctly, which is user error. You can damage the collar If you are not careful using tools such as vice grips or a hammer when adding or removing links. If the collar gets, e.g., slammed in a car door or run over by a truck., a link may be damaged. Check the collar before you put it on your dog. If a link is loose, reconnect it, if its damaged, I’d replace the link, not the entire collar. I have had no damage or serious wear to the links on my collar in 6 years of normal use with my lab. I have complete confidence in this product, and would definitely still strongly recommend it to a friend.
