Successfully composting in bear country
I have wanted to try composting for years, but I have been hesitant to do so for two reasons: 1. the exorbitant cost of composting bins and 2. the fear of attracting raccoons and black bears to my yard. My second reason was assuaged recently, when my county published composting guides for living in "bear country," so I decided to bite the bullet and invest in a compost bin. I chose this one because of the simple design and relative low cost, although I am still scratching my head over why these plastic containers range from $50 to $150 and more. It makes no sense to me, when a trash bin using similar plastic is only $15. ANYWAY, I am happy to say that my new compost bin arrived earlier than expected and was a breeze to assemble. My three children, ages 8-12, actually put it together as soon as it arrived. Just be careful when you are opening the box because the screws and nuts were loose in our box and they went flying everywhere when we dumped the pieces out of the box. We have set it up in our backyard and have been happily composting ever since. I like the design because it is very wide and has plenty of airholes for circulation. The only thing I would change (besides the price) would be to give it a hinged lid because it is a pain to take the lid all the way off when you have a bucket of composting materials in one hand. BTW, if you have concerns about wildlife like I did, the tip from our county is that whenever you add food materials to the compost pile, cover the food with enough brown material, like dead leaves, to mask the smell. You also need to turn the contents every couple of weeks, and cover with more browns.
