I don't buy things just because they are associated with a favorite program and I admit I was a little skeptical when I saw a Christmas album associated with Downton Abbey. However, I was very impressed the moment I heard this collection. Whether the music or singing style is associated with the era depicted in Downton Abbey is still debatable. The real point here is that this album has a palpable feel of classic Christmas. What a terrific job they did bringing this collection together! There is a distinguishable English feel along with an older theatrical style to some of the songs. Of course there are traditional chorales as well. I was even skeptical when I saw some of the actors from the show had singing and speaking parts. However, I really enjoyed songs from Julien Ovenden and Elizabeth McGovern. I am mixed on Elizabeth's intonation, but her voice is terrific. The reading of Night Before Christmas by Jim Carter was so fantastic. I was really impressed. The cast presence is limited so it's not hitting you over the head with connections to the show. I also can't tell you I loved every single song on the album, but with 45 tracks it's very likely not every song will suit one's tastes. I was pleasantly surprised with the inclusion of an old French carol, which are a particular favorite of mine. Ultimately, the classic feel of these songs and the way they are sung will remind you of very traditional Christmases long, long past. It is very rare for new releases to have this exceptional quality of atmosphere. It brought back wonderful feelings and memories of window shopping as a kid, the Christmas music they played on speakers at night in my little town, Christmas plays at school, and the music we had in our own home growing up (even though it was late 60's - 70's, we had old stuff). I think even very young generations can create their own memories with this classic collection, though not everyone will appreciate the theatrical style in places. The mix is eclectic enough to not grow tiresome. I highly recommend it!
