Goodreads: on the Kindle Fire and HDX series
If you frequent or use the popular Goodreads site on the 'Net, then the name will need no introduction. But for those who are new to it, Goodreads is a 'social cataloging' Website that permits readers to sign up and register books to create their library catalogs and reading lists. It also allows users to create their own groups of book suggestions and discussions, along with posting their own reviews. That being said, Goodreads on the Kindle Fire (and now the HD/HDX series) is an excellent way for users of this device to access this site. Once this free app is downloaded and installed, you'll be required to register with your email address, or you can choose the Facebook option if you have an account on that social media site. The interface is clean, simple and familiar to any Goodreads user. In the main screen, are the following options: > Updates > My Books > My Profile > My Groups > My Friends Within the Updates section, you can see what your friends are reading and what rating they have applied (1 to 5 stars) and you can also update your own reading process. The My Books section give you access to all of your shelves, sort your bookshelves in a wide variety of methods, see what reviews you have posted and what comments might have been made by other readers... and you can even comment on them within this app. The My Profile section gives you access to just that: your profile. This is how all of the others who access this site, and as with all of the other pages here, it's well formatted, clear and quite legible. [Update: 12/30/2013] Since posting this review, I have acquired a new Kindle Fire HDX 7" and can verify that this app does work with the HD and HDX series. This is probably as a result of the Fire OS 3.1 upgrade as noted in the Kindle forum, where this new, free software update is noted as being available for the Kindle Fire HD 2nd Generation and Kindle Fire HDX devices. Summary: There are not that many great book sites available for the Kindle Fire, but this and Michael Gallagher's Free Kindle Books and Tips are two personal favorites. For new users and current members alike, Goodreads is an excellent app for the Kindle Fire, and the fact that it's free makes it all the better. JW 8/11/2012, updated 12/30/2013
