I got these for my dog so that she can communicate when she wants to go out, play, or eat. I think I might have gotten a really good batch because I didn't have any problems with recording my voice. It actually sounds better when spoken at a quiet volume. She has learned to use "outside," and "play" very quickly. We've had them for a couple of days and she learned "play," in the first day. While my husband and daughter were reading in the room with her toy box, she pushed "play," several times and seemed excited when they threw her ball, or played tug. Today, she saw the neighbor's cat through the door and pushed, "outside." As far as using it for an AAC for kids, the buttons are a little bit stiff. They might be good for someone who has high tone or has experience pushing buttons. Kids who have hypotonia may have trouble activating the buttons; especially if they hit one of the edges, instead of the middle. The size is good for a head switch, too.
