Warning--this supplement contains iron!
This supplement contains ionic minerals. They are vegan, easy to digest, and easy to swallow. The macro minerals, calcium and magnesium, are in the proper 1:1 ratio. The triad of zinc, copper and manganese is kept in a specific ratio so that they do not imbalance each other. Eidon minerals are manufactured entirely in the USA, so there is no need to worry about toxic Chinese ingredients. In addition, every batch is independently tested for contamination with toxic, heavy metals.
It is important to note that this supplement contains iron. Men and post-menopausal women should NOT take iron. Excess iron can cause tissue damage and mutations of cell DNA that can lead to cancer. Excess iron can damage the heart, liver, thyroid, pancreas, adrenals, joints, and the organs that produce sex hormones, leading to impotence in men, and lowered libido in both men and women. Unfortunately, I can find no version of Multiple Minerals without iron, so being in the post-menopausal category, I have switched to Eidon Bone Support Mineral Supplement and Eidon Silica Mineral Supplement. Note that if it were not for the iron, I would give this product 5 stars.
It is important to address the concept of the higher "bioavailability" of "ionic" minerals. The label lists a tiny fraction of the amounts of minerals that we are used to seeing in regular supplements, because the form in which the minerals are offered cause them to be much more easily absorbed by the body. Per the theory behind ionic minerals, by the time ordinary forms of minerals pass through the digestive tract and the liver, only a small fraction of the mineral can be absorbed and utilized by the body. Because ionic minerals are in a form that allows virtually the entire dose to be absorbed, much smaller amounts are needed to supply the body with what it needs.
It is possible to discover for yourself if these claims are true, by figuring out if these minerals really are being utilized by your body. There are at least three main, potential ways to accomplish this type of objective verification:
TEST ONE: Have traditional lab tests done, before you start taking this supplement, of your blood levels of calcium and magnesium. Then after taking this supplement for a few weeks, repeat the tests. Unfortunately, there are multiple problems with doing this Test One. A huge issue is inconvenience, expense, and finding a doctor willing to order the tests. The second problem is the question of how viable the information is that the tests provide. Many laboratories claim that a blood calcium test can't be used to check for a lack of calcium in the diet, or the viability of one's supplementation of calcium. Similarly, blood serum testing for magnesium levels in the body can give a misleading result since only about 1% of the body's magnesium store is found in the blood. Another important mineral in this product is silica, but I have not heard of a test of silica (silicon) for healthy levels in the blood, only tests for toxic exposure to silicon particles, which can be damaging to the lungs if breathed in. Mainstream doctors don't care about testing for the other minerals in this product in a routine way, so getting blood tests for them would be difficult, if not impossible.
TEST TWO: Have hair analysis done prior to starting the ionic minerals, and then periodically over time, as you take the minerals. These tests can be ordered through Eidon itself, who use the services of Bio-Trend Technologies, or another lab that offers this service, such as Analytical Research Labs. Hair analysis is well known to the general public as a means to obtain DNA evidence for solving crimes and proving paternity, as well as to test for toxic levels of heavy metals in the body, such as lead, mercury, and arsenic. In 1979, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reviewed 400 studies of hair analysis and published the results in a 300-page report which concludes that hair analysis is a "meaningful and representative tissue for biological monitoring for most of the toxic metals." ("Toxic Trace Metals in Human and Mammalian Hair and Nails", EPA-600 4.79-049, August 1979, US Environmental Protection Agency, Research and Development.) It is less well known by the general public that hair testing can be done to determine levels of vital minerals in the body. While blood mineral level readings are not very effective for examining changes in mineral levels in the body's tissues, hair analysis is much more accurate. The downside of having hair testing to prove to yourself that ionic minerals work is convenience and cost.
TEST THREE: Personally observe and quantify the degree of observable improvement in a physical condition helped by a particular mineral, or the existence in the body of a particular effect caused by a mineral. The two easiest minerals to monitor in terms of observable results in the body are, in my opinion, magnesium and silica, and magnesium is the quickest and easiest of these two. Liquid magnesium citrate, in enormous doses, is often used as a laxative because it draws water into the bowels, which causes stools to be both softer and heavier, allowing them to be pulled more easily and quickly through the bowels by the action of peristalsis, the wormlike movements of the muscles of the bowels. If silica levels are increasing in the body, then over time, most likely at the very least over the course of several of weeks, the appearance of skin, hair and nails will noticeably improve.
I applied Test Three, and verified for myself that the effects of ionic magnesium are as observable as that of regular magnesium supplementation taken via tablets or powder and/or transdermal application of magnesium chloride. To put it bluntly, to test the efficacy of the magnesium in this product, you simply take enough of this supplement to produce a laxative effect--even if you temporarily have to take more than the recommended dose of 30 drops per day. Once you have experienced a loosened stool, you will have proven to yourself that the minerals in this supplement are being absorbed by your body. In addition, I have also noticed over the several weeks I have used this product and, later when I switched out to the Eidon Ionic Silica (to avoid the iron in this product) a noticeable improvement in the health of my skin and nails. This is concrete evidence that the ionic silica is being absorbed and utilized by my body. In addition, a gain I did not expect from the silica has been a noticeable improvement in a longtime problem with painful, ingrown toenails, which a podiatrist informed me that he, and his fellow podiatrists, believe can only be dealt with by periodic outpatient mini-surgeries.
The simplest way to take these ionic minerals is to drop them directly into your mouth and swallow. You can also set out a small dish or glass with about 2-4 ounces of purified water in it, drop the ionic minerals in the water, stir the mixture to dissolve the minerals in the water, and then swallow the mixture. Or you can put the drops in as much as 8-16 ounces of water, stir it well, and sip the mineralized water over the entire course of your waking hours.
Here is what I do: Since this product is expensive, I utilize transdermal application in combination with taking the minerals internally in order to get the most bang for my buck. Because I do that, I personally feel comfortable taking a half dose of 15 drops instead of the recommended dose of 30 drops per day. Be aware that if you take a full dose, the bottle only lasts a month. These are the steps I use:
1. I set out a six-ounce, Pyrex custard cup, because I have at least a dozen of them in my kitchen, and they are a convenient size. You could also use a small juice glass or even a ceramic coffee cup.
2. I put in the custard cup about 2-3 tablespoons of purified water.
3. I put 15 drops of the ionic minerals in the water.
4. I stir the mixture with my finger to dissolve the minerals fully in the water.
5. I pour the mineral mixture in my mouth, but I do NOT swallow.
6. I hold the mineral mixture in my mouth 15-20 minutes, swishing it around and holding it under my tongue, before ultimately swallowing it. This is what I mean by "transdermal application." Holding it in the mouth like this, especially when held under the tongue, allows the minerals to be absorbed directly into the bloodstream through some of the thinnest skin in the body. It also allows it to be absorbed directly into the tissue of the mouth, which is very healthy for the gums and teeth.
7. I do not immediately wash the custard cup. Instead, I put another 2-3 tablespoons of purified water in it after I have consumed the initial mixture. I swish the water around with a finger, rubbing down the sides of the custard cup, in order to dissolve any remaining mineral mixture into the water. Then I swallow that water in order to get the absolute total dose of those expensive ionic minerals.
Why do I dose myself with the minerals this way? As stated above, a lot more of the minerals are going to be absorbed transdermally than going through the digestive tract and the liver. In addition, I make my own toothpaste using calcium and magnesium (see the recipe here in my review of doTERRA OnGuard Natural Whitening Toothpaste http://amzn.to/1x9Ros7). I know for a fact that it is good for the teeth to expose them directly to minerals, because the minerals strengthen tooth enamel. The silica in the mineral mix is also good for the gums as well as teeth.
