The Most Important Book of Our Times
I bought this book in Kindle version yesterday. After reading last night, I am buying a hard cover book to loan to friends. This may be the most important book of our times, and everyone should read it.
One of the most disturbing elements of today's Congress has been an apparent disregard for the effect of their decisions on their base. Betsy DeVos was appointed despite record setting calls to congress. The widespread opposition to her appointment was ignored.
Now we watch as a brutal healthcare bill appears to be on the verge of passing the Senate. If this congress was concerned about elections, they simply would not pass this bill.
The impetus behind these alarming shifts is explained in this book succinctly and clearly. Even the casual observer of our current political situation will find that information regarding the philosophy driving these changes gives a framework in which the inexplicable now makes sense.
An example; Trump's budget director, Mitch Mulvaney, when asked about proposed cuts that would diminish or eliminate the feeding of hungry children, replied that the cuts were in fact extremely compassionate, as they freed those taxed the highest from the burden of feeding children against their will. Paraphrased but accurate.
Seen in the context of social economist James Buchanan's view that the 'liberty' of the minority (the wealthy) should not be infringed by the majority, you can at least understand the framework that the Koch brothers are utilizing as they effectively transform American democracy into an oligarchy.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
