So far, so good!
We noticed almost overnight that we had a carpenter ant problem in the kitchen. We couldn't tell where they were coming from, as they seemed to be all over - walls, ceiling, floor, counters, etc. we made sure to clear away all possible food sources - no dirty dishes, no crumbs, nothing else to attract them. About 24 hours ago, I placed 2 Terro traps on the counter where I saw 4-5 ants wandering around. It took about an hour for the ants to "find" the traps and then they went to town. Within a couple hours, my 4-5 ants turned into 2 or 3 dozen. I know that doesn't sound like a lot compared to the other reviews indicating they saw hundreds. However, carpenter ants are HUGE. We're not talking tiny ants here. So when I see several dozen all at once feasting on my Terro buffet, it's both terrifying and satisfying at the same time. The good news is, I now can tell exactly where they are coming from and once they are gone I can seal up that gap. 24 hours in and they are still making tracks to and from the baits. There is a pretty healthy amount of ants still, and while some of them seem a bit tipsy from the yummy juice already, most seem strong and still successfully carrying bait back to the colony. I have now added 2 more baits to try and entice more and make sure they have enough to drink. Slowly the ants seem to be noticing the new traps and are starting to dine. It is taking some serious restraint on my part to let them continue using my counter as their transit system, as the ant traffic increased steadily once the first few ants fed and went back to the colony. If you are bug squeamish like me, this is probably going to be a painful process for you. Just think of the long term goal and don't go on an ant killing spree - let the ants be. They are doing all the hard work for you! I'll post an update in a couple days to see if I am ant free! UPDATE: After 3-4 days of letting the ants feast on the poison, we were ant free! Not a single new ant emerged and 2 of the 4 traps I put out were completely dry - all of the liquid had been consumed by the ants and taken back to the nest as they are supposed to. We never got around to filling the hole where we think they were coming from, but so far even a year later we have not had any ants return.
