Horrible lid. Not designed for humans to drink from.
As others have stated, the lid pours the hot coffee directly on to your upper lip. You can't drink from it without holding your mouth wide open and pouring it in. This feels terribly unnatural. It is an absolute shame. The build quality is good and the excellent aesthetics will make you think it will work well. By the first sip, you will hate it. Avoid this poor design that values a quirky idea over functionality. Shame on you for putting this on the market Contigo. This was my worst birthday gift I have ever received.
Edit (13-Jun-2014): I've added two stars as the result of the good customer service on the part of Contigo. A representative, named Nathan, from Contigo contacted me. While Contigo is still delusional that the original lid is satisfactory for most people, they did acknowledge that the lid was problematic for many of their customers. They offered a replacement lid shipped for free. The new lid does work much better. The problem with the original lid was that it functioned like a needle valve, but did not allow the sealing plunger to move far enough out of the drinking hole. This caused half of the coffee to go down around the plunger and pour down the spout, while the other half went up around the plunger to burn the lip of the unfortunate customer. The way Contigo resolved this was to make a lid that allowed far greater clearance of the plunger, which then allows coffee to pour straight down the spout. I now love this mug, so why not full stars? Well Contigo doesn't believe that they are fully responsible for their poor design. They will therefore not replace your lid with a color-matching lid. They will merely send a generic lid to attempt to pacify you. Somehow Contigo fails to understand the physiognomy of the human body, and has the misconceived notion that only a small amount of people are affected. The truth is that people either start drinking differently to accommodate their poor design or put their product on the shelf to collect dust. This lack of responsibility will cost Contigo customers and reputation. I would buy three more Contigo Snapseals today if I knew I could get them with a color-matched, working lid.
