Anker PowerLine Teardown Review
The Importance of a 20AWG Charging Wire
--------------------------------------------------------
Many cheap Micro USB cables use 28AWG current wires or commonly referred to as 28/28 AWG - 'AWG' is a representation of the thickness of a wire . Higher the AWG number , thinner the wire .These 28AWG cables will barely be able to carry more than 0.5 A of current to you phone , no matter how powerful your charger is and as a result will charge you devices very slowly. Compare that a 20AWG Wire which 2.5 times thicker (or 150%) than the 28AWG cable. You can see visually in my tear-down image the difference in the thickness off the Data and the Power cables
Cable Construction & Kevlar Reinforcement
----------------------------------------------------------
Kevlar is actually a trademark of the DuPont company. The Kevlar fiber used in the Anker Powerline is known as K49 (Yellowish in color) which is used for reinforcing cables and making marine mooring ropes.
- The cable wires itself are made of Silver conductor which is a good thing as Silver has better electrical conductivity than copper (a common misconception)
- The Kevlar fiber reinforcement gives is what gives these cable a very good durability. Typically whenever a cable is bent, some of the thinner silver wires break (see pic) and if repeatedly stressed at the same point (like near the connectors ) the entire connection can break. The Kevlar fiber keeps the cable structure intact (being more flexible and stronger than the silver wires) and minimizing the damage done due to these 'mirco' breaks
- The Mirco USB connector is very sleek and should be able to fit well even with cases with very small openings
- Will truly be able to charge all your devices at their maximum potential speeds
Cons
--------
- Its has a slightly shorter length at 3 Ft whereas the standard size for most cables is at 3.3 Ft
So there it is , the Anker PowerLine is an excellent cable & is everything that it claims to be. It is well worth the $5 investment and I hope that this treardown picture of my cable will come to your mind while thinking of purchasing cheap cables the next time :)
