Necessary? No. Convenient? Absolutely!
Purchased this commercial rated machine after reading some of the issues with some of the residential models related to the pumps, etc... I have often used my mother's Keurig which is a K45 which she has had for nearly three years of trouble free service and I initially thought of simply getting that model based on her experience. However, the more I read, the more I began to question the quality of the units being sold based on the reviews people were posting around the internet.
Therefore, seeking out the most robust model for purchase since I am a frequent coffee drinker I came across the K145 (formerly B145), read the pretty good reviews and made the plunge.
I have had no issues regarding my machine - worked right out of the box and the portions are spot on (I have been checking from time to time to see if it was accurate).
Regarding the noise, I can't see what the fuss is all about. It lasts about 5 seconds or so and is not nearly as loud as people make it out to be. Is it louder then the residential machine? Slightly, very slightly. However, I credit the more robust pump with the increase in noise. I cannot think of what it compares to, but I can tell you my electric razor, ice maker, hand mixer, dishwasher and microwave are all louder when operating.
So unless you are living in a monastery where everyone is operating under a vow of silence, chances are you would never hear/pay attention as the machine does its thing.
In my personal opinion, if you can afford it, step up and pay the few bucks extra if you can to get this machine with the reported stronger internals. I did it for my own personal peace of mind, even though I have never had a negative experience using a Keurig of any type.
Regarding the K-cups themselves, I pilfered a variety of different brands from my mother (Thanks mom!!) to try in my machine as the reviews indicate not all K-cups will work smoothly in this machine. So far they all have, but I have not tried any teas, chai, hot coco or any other non-coffee cup.
I did purchase the Solofill Refillable cup and that seems to work fine. The disposable paper cups and lids will NOT work in this unit (unless I am doing something incorrectly).
