Take the instructions seriously!
I've gone through a lot of trial and error with these litter boxes, and I've learned that the information in the manual really needs to be followed for the unit to perform as it should. Specifically: - Use a hard-clumping litter. If you don't, the rake will break the clumps into pieces and the smaller ones won't be swept into the receptacle. - Clean the pan at least once every two months, but preferably once a month. That means emptying it out, cleaning the pan thoroughly, and putting in new litter. - Pay attention to the fill lines - overfilling and underfilling will both result in diminished performance and increase the likelihood of the rake getting jammed. - If you don't do these things, it puts a lot of stress and the motor and associated mechanisms, and the unit's performance will steadily degrade until it becomes more trouble than it's worth. Another reviewer suggested coating the pan with Rust Oleum Never Wet, which prevents moisture from sticking to the pan. As the biggest problem I've encountered is wet clumps sticking, this is a great suggestion, and it's worked very well so far.
