Looks like bead board, easier to put up!
We have a lot of bead board in our home, both the kind that come in sheets and the tongue and groove kind.. The sheets are very hard to cut a perfect straight line on (at least for us) and can be a pain to put up. The tonque and groove kind is actually easier to put up, but there's a lot of cutting with the saw and having to use the nailgun, which means pulling the air compressor inside.. It's a lot of work, but I love the look...
I'm now working on my kitchen and wanted to add beadboard to the sides of a couple of new cabinets we just put in and behind the stove.. I also want to create the look of a self standing hutch with another cabinet unit by adding a beadboard backing, but I really wasn't sure I wanted to deal with trying to make perfect cuts with the sheet beadboard and knew I didn't want to add the thickness of tongue and groove board...
I started looking for other ideas and came upon a blog someone had about doing their cupboards with this kind of wallpaper..I had never heard of beadboard wallpaper and was very happy to find it available on amazon, since we live in the boonies and have limited options locally...
I ordered one roll to give it a try... Based on some of the reviews, I wanted to make sure it was going to stick before buying more..
Because of some of the reviewers who had problems getting it to stick, I also purchased some wallpaper paste.. I "painted" the sides of my cabinets with a thin layer of the wallpaper paste, then followed the directions for the wallpaper, letting it sit for 10 minutes after rolling it in the water... I then put it up and smoothed it down with a wallpaper brush and a cloth.. It stuck beautifully.. I've now painted it with 2 coats of paint and have to say, it looks just the like the beadboard sheets we used in my studio.. In fact, it may actually be prettier..
I'm not really sure I actually needed the wallpaper paste, though.. The backing felt very sticky after booking for 10 minutes..
It's a great advantage over using a wood product, especially in a kitchen where there's a lot of cuts.. It's a lot easier to get a perfect cut from wallpaper than wood.. And honestly, this does look like real painted beadboard..
The cost of a sheet of beadboard at our local home depot is about $20 (4'x8').. If I'm doing my math correctly, I believe this one roll for around $17 will cover as much space as 2 sheets of beadboard paneling (costing $40)..
I like the look this gave my cabinets so much, I've decided to wallpaper the entire wall behind my stove, sink and counter tops in the kitchen, so I just ordered another roll..
It's kind of a foamy type of paper with actual indents where the strips of "wood" meet, so there's texture to it, like real wood...
For me, this was a very good alternative to putting up wood beadboard.. I'm very happy with this purchase.
