Might as Well Stick Your Laptop in a Freezer
I have an Asus G60. Cooling pads work radically differently with different types of laptops, so keep that in mind as you read.
Pros:
Functionality: 10/10. Cools great and is relatively quiet, barely louder than my laptop itself on full power. On its own, the monster gpu (GTS 360M) on my laptop pours out the heat from the side during load. I've literally melted crayons that have sat next to it. It also gets pretty hot on the keyboard on that side. With the massive fan on this cooler, the heat coming out the side is much reduced and the keyboard is much cooler, not to mention the heat is expelled farther from whatever surface or lap the laptop is on. I haven't done benchmarking, but I would guess a good 10-15C difference in the core based on what it puts out. I don't know which other laptops blow heat out the bottom or side but this pad blows up into the laptop, so that's something to keep in mind.
Controls/ports are very helpful. 8/10. I need a lot of USBs and this thing nets me three extra (Since I use a USB for power. There's also the option of AC wall power so you don't tie up a port on your laptop). The controls for the fan are perfect. Easy on/off button and fan speed dial. It has a clip on either side underneath the main surface for wires that is really helpful, it really does almost become a docking station. However, the ports and buttons are receded a couple inches into the side of the pad, making them hard to reach without going over and looking into the side of it. Not a huge deal, I'm just really picky :P In fact, now that I think about it, that will keep rigid connectors from sticking out the sides and getting bumped/broken off, so I guess it's a trade off.
Build Quality: 9/10 I've only had it a few weeks, but it seems pretty sturdily built for being largely plastic. The actual laptop surface is a metal mesh, so no problem there, but I will see how the plastic base and hinges hold up with regular transportation and use. Actually the plastic keeps it really light for its size. This thing would be a beast if it was all metal. If it breaks, I'll come back and edit this review. So if you're reading this, know that it's still working great.
Cons:
Comfort/Ease of Use: 5/10 (Just for my particular laptop, Asus G60) Again, it is impossible to fit every laptop perfectly, but it fits an Asus G60 acceptably, though it could be better. Its a bit bulky, so its hard to transport. Also, I tend to lose things, so keeping track of the removable support brackets for holding the laptop up when the pad is inclined is a struggle for me. :P
This may be getting picky, but the bottom edges of the base are right angles where they touch the surface of whatever you're on, meaning you can't get your fingers under the bottom base to just pick up the whole thing if its on a flat, hard surface. You have to find some other way to pick it up. Not a big deal, just a nuisance.
If you hold it on your lap with a heavier laptop (8 lbs+), the base is a ring of plastic with hard edges all around, so it can begin to dig into your legs after a while.
With my laptop, the brackets that are used to hold the laptop from sliding down stick up above the edge and tend to block certain areas of the keyboard if I want to keep my hands rested on the laptop while typing. A bit annoying, BUT they can be adjusted about an inch in either direction. Now I don't know of any other way to hold the laptop on there, this may be the least of all evils. The rubber pads in the four corners don't do much unless your laptop feet line up perfectly with them.
I'm not sure this is a pro or a con, but the fan on this thing is so powerful, my hands sometimes get cold while holding it in my lap because of the amount of cold air coming out the sides between the laptop and pad, and I have to turn the fan down. Guess that tells you how powerful the fan is.
The bottom line is: 8.5/10. No cooling pad fits all laptops perfectly, but this thing has a monster yet quiet fan that does an awesome job of cooling this oven of a laptop I have. If you can find it in a store, see how it fits your laptop and if it fits well, come back here and buy it. I doubt any 80$ pad would cool better than this without sounding like a jet engine. I wouldn't buy it again, because it doesn't fit my laptop perfectly, but it may fit yours better. If it does, I would recommend it 100%. The cons are minimal and acceptable to me compared to how good it cools and is designed, even though it doesn't fit mine perfectly.
I hope that helped, good luck in your decision!
