Brings back so many memories. NOTE - Mine was seemingly DOA (dead on arrival) as well, but then I noticed that there is a tiny RESET BUTTON next to the slot where you pull the white tab from in the back. I used a small screwdriver and pushed the button in for a few seconds, turned it back around and pushed the ON button and it worked. Neither the instructions nor box it came in made any mention of this. Hope this helps someone else.
