This is the golden stuff you get in the theatre, but it's not the best thing out there.....
For a lot of popcorn enthusiasts the holy grail of popcorn is "movie theatre style" popcorn. A lot of people are looking to replicate this taste at home.
Actually movie theatre style is pretty easy to achieve and consists of three basic ingredients
1. Yellow Popcorn
2. Coconut Oil
3. Flavacol (A brand of popcorn "butter" flavored salt).
Mix in appropriate ratios and pop it up.
But even that will get you the basics, where do you find that liquid gold that you pour on the popcorn. Well this is it. Not surprisingly it's not real butter. It's an "flavored" oil. But the taste is spot on. Now when I say spot on, I don't mean it tastes like butter, I mean it tastes like that stuff behind the concession stand at the movies.
So if your goal is movie theatre popcorn, this completes the experience, and it has a very long shelf life, so you don't have to worry about refrigeration. However, it's not the best you can do.
Nothing beats actual butter. However, most people use butter wrong. If you simply melt butter and pour it on top, you might be horrified to see your kernels shrivel and shrink. That's because of the water in the butter.
The best thing to use is clarified butter. that's butter where the butterfat is segregated from the milk solids and water. The clarified butter won't shrivel your popcorn and tastes great.
Clarified butter is expensive, it's somewhat hard to find (don't use ghee, as that's normally made from goat milk) O'Dell's makes a popcorn butter that is clarified butter and it's great, but not cheap.
If you don't want to mess with clarified butter or can't find it, this is a great alternative.
