Great unit. Beware these installation pitfalls.
Window AC units get smaller, lighter, quieter and cheaper every year. I got the LW6017R to cool a small bedroom. I am very happy with the unit, especially how quiet it is and would have given it 5 stars were it not for the facts that instructions and some of the installation hardware caused me a lot of trouble. 1st) It is almost impossible to figure out which is the left or right side curtain from the pictures. 2nd) It doesn't matter. Either way I installed them, the vinyl window sash would not fit inside the top screw hole eyelets so I had to cut off the protruding plastic eyelets with a Dremel tool. 3rd) It is very easy to drop a screw into the unit when fitting the curtains as I found out with the first screw of 8!. It took me an hour to get it out which I finally did with a magnet on a straightened coat hanger. I then covered the vent holes with an album jacket (as in vinyl record album) which prevented other screws from falling in. Customers should be cautioned to cover those holes with anything. Murphy's law caused my errant screw to find it's way to a place it wouldn't budge from by turning the unit over, which I tried many times. 4th) The foam that adheres to the bottom of the window sash is too thin to do any good. In fact, it is so thin that it tears easily and if your skin touches the sticky side, it pulls pieces off the foam that are harder to remove from human skin than superglue. I had to use WD40 and a scrub pad to get it off my finger tips.
I've been installing window units most of my life (about 60 years of them). My dad worked for an electric utility so we had AC as long as I can remember and I was his helper at a young age. I've done it all and seen it all. As small and light as this unit is, it was one of the most tedious installs I've done for the reasons mentioned above. Luckily. it only weighs 39 lbs. If this had been one of those old 15000 btu, 200 lb monsters I grew up with I would have been hosed. I highly recommend the product, but caution prospective buyers to note the issues I encountered. If you are prepared for them, you should have no trouble. I would ask LG to reengineer the side curtains. The hardware doesn't work well in some modern windows.
