Need to understand what you're getting into
I've owned the Sense for about a week now, and have not had any problems that I can attribute to the lock. The lock has a quality feel to it and seems as safe as any other Schlage product. Matched with a Schlage dummy handle it is a very attractive combination. I have not had it report as locked when it is not, nor has it unlocked unexpectedly. I trust it so far. I get a kick out of asking Siri to lock, unlock, or verify lock status.
I like that Schlage allows up to 8 digit codes. I would like to see a timeout or alert function after X bad attempts, so that you get alerted or can delay someone trying to enter codes randomly.
I can see how some would have frustration with remote access and general HomeKit configuration due to the newness and incompleteness of Apple's solution. All of the issues that I've read above have resolutions, but are not immediately obvious.
A few things to keep in mind based on previous reviews.
1. The instructions for the Sense do state not to turn the thumbscrew until the battery is connected and you've tested to touchpad. That's when it figures out orientation. The thumbscrew will not turn in one of the directions prior to this.
2. Yes, an Apple TV is required to be in Bluetooth range of the lock for remote access. This is stated on Apple's HomeKit website, but not clearly enough. The AppleTV will work as a bridge between the Bluetooth lock and other Bluetooth HomeKit devices and WIFI for remote access. It does work, but there is a delay. The same is true when accessing the lock from another part of the house. It will be slow to connect if you aren't in Bluetooth range. Very slow.
3. It is HomeKit only. If you aren't ready for HomeKit or have an Android, buy the Connect. The Sense app doesn't even ask for a login, as its connecting directly to the HomeKit data on your device. And it works well with multiple Apple devices.
Issues with HomeKit sometimes need to be solved by resetting all HomeKit configuration data from the settings/privacy section of your device. Then waiting for iCloud Keychain synchronization before starting over. I had to do this while configuring the Sense, as my HomeKit data had become out of sync somehow. I reset the data, reconfigured the home, then added my wife's account and now all of our devices work together.
I'm only giving 4 stars, not due to the device itself, but because of the overall incompleteness of the HomeKit experience. As it matures, it will get better.
