Clarification about biodegradability - they DO BREAK DOWN
A lot of people have been posting 1 or 2 star reviews because they claim the bag is not biodegradable. So I sent the company an email, and this was their reply: Gen Loyer replied: Hi ___, Thank you for contacting Earth Rated PoopBags! According to updated regulations in the US, only a 100% renewable resource, such as our compostable bags, may be considered truly biodegradable. However, our green bags have an EPI additive which allows them to break down unlike traditional plastic bags and have been tested to break down in approximately 18-24 months in a bioreactor landfill. We hope this helps clarify any concerns you may have had. Should you have any further questions, we are always happy to help! Have a nice day! Gen Loyer | Earth Rated(tm) PoopBags info@earthrated.com | Toll-Free 1-888-354-2818 _____________________________ I also looked up what an EPI additive was, and this is the company's website: [...] and a quote about what their additives do: "EPI's technology has been designed to control and manage the lifetime of products made from the most common plastics used by modern society. TDPA® based technology enables products made from polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and polystyrene (PS) to degrade and, in most cases biodegrade, when discarded, into environmentally benign products within a few months to a few years as compared to decades or longer for the same products made without the benefit of the technology." _____________________________ So these BAGS DO BREAK DOWN AFTER 24 MONTHS. But because this breakdown is facilitated by an additive, they are not considered biodegradable by US standards, but they are by Canadian standards. EarthRated does sell a similar product (more expensive) made from corn-based products, which do naturally decompose within 2 months (60 Earth Rated Compostable Dog Waste Poop Bags, Unscented, 4 rolls, 60-Count). In my opinion, this still makes this bag better than other entirely plastic products, and after comparing prices for several other types of eco-friendly poop bags, I am still purchasing this bag from this company. In terms of the product itself, it is slightly longer than normal bags, which is great for tying off, or when your dog has a "wet one", or even for second pick-ups. The lavender scent is great - it's just enough to cover up the smell when I'm tying up the bag, but it's not overpowering. Also, even though the bag is longer, it still comes 15 bags/roll, on a cardboard center, and it STILL FITS in my normal poop bag dispenser (although a little tight when unrolling the first bag). Hope this helps 16lb terrier/poodle mix - Odin
