Very convenient
These are a convenient way to give your trees some nutrients; been using them for years. A few tips: - Set the spikes after a good rain, so the ground is soft -- it will be *much* easier. - Find a clear shot in the ground with a knife first. If you try to hammer this into a rock or a root, the spike will just shatter. Heck, the spike will shatter if the ground isn't soft enough. - With the cap on the spike, push it into the knife-hole a bit with the heel of your hand. - Pound it in until the cap reaches the ground with a decent-sized hammer. A mini-sledge is best -- lots of mass, so you don't have to swing fast. You're less likely to shatter the spike that way. - Remove the cap (you don't get a cap for each spike) and pound it in below ground level. - Once you've opened the outer seal (there is no inner seal), humidity will get in and gradually soften the spikes, so either set them all within a day or two or store the remainder in a ziplock bag.
