If you're going to get this item, you seriously need to sandwich the 'filter' layer between the two solid pans as most of the other reviewers have suggested. If used as instructed by the manufacturer, you get solidified clumps of litter stuck in the holes of the filter and it's a nightmare to clean. (See picture for what 2 cats can do in 2.5 days when I had to leave town for a last minute med appt.) When you stack them as such: Top Solid Pan + Litter Filter Pan Bottom Solid Pan It makes cleaning up super easy, barely an inconvenience. Simply lift the top pan with the litter and droppings, dump the mess into the stacked Filter+Solid bottom pans, then lift and shake the filter pan slightly to catch all the detritus. The clean litter falls into the bottom pan. Throw out the nuggets, then restack the pans again, this time the bottom one becomes the top!
