Real, True, Incredible
I just finished the film a few minutes ago and felt compelled to write a review. I don't often review movies, but this … this was a real movie. Wow. There were awkward, real life moments, humor, truth, feelings … just everything. As I watching, I kept thinking, "here it comes, here's the part where this turns into every other romanticized rom-com out there," but it never did. Not that I find anything wrong with romantic comedies per se because I do enjoy them, but this was so refreshing, it was like having a glass of water after drinking too much soda. At first, the pop tastes good, but after a while, the bubbles go away and it gets warm and your teeth start to hurt and then all you can think about is ice cold water. Delicious.
Is this movie about abortion? Sort of. Is it about people and real life? Absolutely. Some of the reviews are criticizing it because it's pro this or pro that or OMG, there's feminism in this film! First off, this movie isn't pro-anything - it's just about life. It never touts anything as right or wrong, doesn't judge. And second of all, when is having strong female characters that can actually think for themselves a bad thing? Is the world inundated and overcrowded with movies where women actually think and feel things, where life actually happens? Not really.
When the film first started, I wasn't sure what to think. Yes, the beginning is a little awkward and there are a few strange moments here and there, but that's what life's all about. I just watched this for free via Amazon Prime and then immediately ordered the blu-ray. This is a film, an idea, an honest truth that I have to support. For the first time in forever, I've watched a movie that doesn't feel like it's trying too hard, doesn't shy away from a subject that needs to be talked about, that matters. Abortion. Yes, it's in this movie and *spoilers* the main character does get an abortion, but it isn't glorified nor is it demonized, it just is. It is, and there's still a love story, and there's still humor, and as a twenty-something woman in America today, I feel like this is a pretty accurate portrayal of how we talk and think and feel. We can talk about abortion, we can love men but still be strong women, be feminists, love life, make mistakes, and tell the truth.
Watch this movie. Whether you love it or hate it, you will learn something about yourself. I, personally, loved it and won't stop recommending it until everyone I know has seen it.
