First off, I received this on 1 day shipping. Once I opened the Amazon package, I was please y surprised to find plastics wrapped around a reusable sheer bag that contained the journal. The leather is smooth and smells like leather. As you can see from the pictures, it definitely looks hand crafted. As I would expect with many handcrafted items, it appears o be delicate. I have seen similar journals for more money and others for less. The ones for less are usually not hand crafted in the US. This journal is hand crafted in Chicago, Il. The leather putter is like a book cover and therefore the paper journal can easily be replaced. The paper journal is bound by thin rope. I might add another piece to the binding to help keep it more secure. I look forward to using this as it has the look, I am looking for and I really enjoy supporting small business and buying products made in the USA.
