I have lots of dogs and cats, and have had Drinkwell fountains (the big dog and the platinum) for a couple of years. The animals really liked them (esp the platinum) But the platinum motor died. It appears I can get a replacement motor, but for just about the same amount of money, I could buy a Dogit Fountain. I know that throwing out something that can be fixed is the American way, but that is not why I bought the Dogit. I bought it because I HATE CLEANING THE DRINKWELL. The cats like to play with the water/wash their paws it it (adds kitty litter,)and the dogs drop debris from their faces in it. As a result, the water dirties quickly, the screen clogs, and the filter gets slimy. Trying to clean all the nooks and crannies in this poorly designed fountain requires test tube cleaners, elbow grease and the dishwasher. At least under the heavy use at my house. Not to mention the cost of replacing the charcoal filters. So, on to the Dogit. It took a couple of days for them to use it, but now pretty much all are using it (except for the couple of cats who still prefer the running water feature and they have the Big dog Drinkwell) The dogs don't stick their faces in 2 inches of water, the cats don't play with the water, and after 10 days, it is still clean...Woo Hoo. Cleaning it is easy: wash the cover, bowl and rinse the filter. The only caveat is that cats (who need extra water for whatever reason) don't seem quite as entranced. But, did I mention that it stayed clean? And I have to clean the drinkwell 3x more often? So what is the point? The water stays clean and aerated. Neither happens with a regular bowl. If my opinion changes over times, I will modify the review.
