A special educator’s review
I am a school-based speech therapist working with students in K-5 and this game has quickly become a hit in my speech room! Since first introducing this game, I constantly have students asking me if we can play the “Lava game”, so it is definitely a great addition to any special needs setting due to the motivational aspect of this game. The purpose of the game is simple: Players pretend that the floor is lava and can only step on the colored tiles. On their turn, players spin a color spinner and have to cross tiles to get to the closest tile of that particular color. After each turn, one tile gets removed to make the game more challenging. If a player cannot find a tile that matches the color on the spinner they are out. There are also specially marked tiles that require players to perform a specific action (e.g., spin around like a ballerina, touch your toes, etc.), which is great when working on following directions. Even my lower functioning students and students on the Autism spectrum were able to grasp the rules and participate. Some of my students had difficulty not stepping off the tiles while moving to the next tiles, so we modified the rules and didn’t penalize them for that. The tiles are made of craft foam and come in varying sizes. What’s nice about the material is that it doesn’t slip on uncarpeted floor (my classroom floor is linoleum). This game is excellent when working on planning skills, following directions, and sportsmanship. I played it with groups ranging from 2-4 and found that it works best with 3 players. With larger groups the game had a tendency to end quickly, because we ran out of tiles faster. When playing this game, I would also make sure that players wear only socks in order to keep the tiles clean. The Floor is Lava is definitely a game that keeps kids moving and engaged. I will be pulling out often!
