I Broke the Chains of Cable...Finally!
Here is my review for some folks who still may be on the fence about getting it.... I'm a newbie cord cutter, and as a family we were using Time Warner, with 2 DVR boxes, 1 regular HD box, and of course the requisite cable modem. In equipment rental fees alone we were paying almost $40. I need my sports, so all flavors of ESPN was a must, Big 10 channel, Fox sports, NFL channel, etc. And to get Redzone, I HAD to get an additional sports package that I didnt really want. All tolled, our monthly bill was north of $200. Now if I argued with, or threatened TW every year I could get $10 off here, $20 bucks there, but of course it was always temporary. Now Ive always known about Sling TV, but since you could only view one instance of it at any time, it was a non starter to me, plus they were missing quite a few channels that I wanted. Enter PS Vue...the Core Slim plan for 34.99 gets me everything my family needs. Im covered sports wise as well, with all ESPN channels, Big 10, SEC, and Fox sports. With Tru tv, TNT, and of course OTA major networks, I havent missed a lick of March Madness. Of course the elephant in the room is no NFL channel and no Redzone. I'm fine with Thursday night football on CBS for the 1st half of the season, but after that its only on the NFL channel. My remedy for this...Im on Verizon. With their NFL Mobile, I get Redzone and NFL TV, and I only turn it on and pay for it once a year when I need it. So here we are... $34.99 for PS Vue to get live TV (plus I get free OTA as everyone can) $39.99 internet service only (increased my plan to 60 down, 5 up and bought my own modem) and new total charges per month is $75! Now, for full disclosure, I did pay one time costs to get 3 Fire sticks, and 2 Fire TV boxes. I also have a PS and a PS4 so all bases are covered there. Since you can watch PS VUE on 5 concurrent instances, we never have an issue there. We're also an Amazon household, so Amazon video is on deck, as well as Netflix (I "borrow" someone elses login for that) No need for Hulu as PS Vue has On demand next day for all major networks sans CBS (which is coming), but I also have an OTA DVR, so I can catch CBS there...but.. in truth, I could care less...Ive been a hardcore XBMC/Kodi user for years. Lets just say I dont really need ANY service to to watch these programs. I can get ANYthing I want (no need to get into details on that). On top of all of that, I use Plex as well, and since Fire tv runs that app, I can watch all of my personal media on any display on the house, and remotely. Lets not forget PS Vue has a cloud based DVR, so I have DVR service on every TV...lets add that to the cost savings! $12 equipment rental x 5...$60 extra a month saved over cable added to everything else! I cant speak for everyone, but even without all the other things I do, PS Vue allows my family and I significant cost savings, with little sacrifice, especially if youre really honest about what you watch anyway. $75 a month, with On demand and, theoretically, 5 DVRs, and no contract. Whats not to love?
