Big power at a big cost
In comparison to solar generators of similar size, this unit has some considerable advantages. It is lighter, 31pounds, so lugging it around is easier. It charges from the wall at an astounding rate, generally less than two hours, and It flexes its considerable brawn producing a whopping 1,800 watts allowing you to run pressure cookers, microwave ovens and other power hungry appliances. There is, however, a cost. It has a poor charge cycle life-800 cycles cut it to 60% power (LFP cells now get upwards of 2,000), an inverter efficiency of less than 80%(this is almost 90% in more efficient systems), and a wretched round trip efficiency of less than 60%-(for every 100 watts you feed it, it gives you back fewer than 60). A decent setup of this nature is almost 80% efficiency. That said, it’s a keeper. As a camper, I can put up with the setbacks in order to have juice to run many more electrical items when I need it, and understand that its life is powerful, but shorter. So far, solar generators have generally had anemic output, preposterously long charge times, and absurd price demands for “extras” such as the solar power cords or mppt “upgrades”. This unit proves that better output/input speeds are possible. Soon, a company will combine a less wasteful inverter/charger with a LFP battery, and that manufacturer will become rich indeed.
