I love this - it works, it's safe, it's sturdy. If I was a single parent, this would get 5-stars. I am not a single parent though, and my wife hates - HATES - this gate. She has cursed more in front of our daughter while trying to wrangle the locking mechanism on this gate than she has in any other context. There was a moment where I thought she might throw it across the room, but the locking bar got tangled on her sweater and she just sorta collapsed with it in defeat. Another time, around 3 am, my sick daughter needed her humidifier refilled and I had this as a barrier to her bathroom. I tried to step over the gate (which I can do, because I'm a giant) because I didn't feel like fiddling with the mechanism and was tired. I broke my toe when I ended up kicking the doorway in the process of vaulting the gate. This is not the fault of the gate. It didn't dare me to treat it like a hurdle. But it is worth mentioning that even I prefer not to mess with the lock when I'm tired This is not a good gate for high-traffic zones populated by mechanically un-inclined spouses or those suffering from sleep-deprivation. This is great for permanently isolating a specific zone of the house that you never anticipate entering again.
