Look, as a fan since the early 90s, I've heard it all regarding NIN. From non-fans who say it is just noise or that NIN fans are all sheeple that think anything that Trent Reznor puts out is genius to the occasional listener that thinks 'Closer' is a sexy, fun song :( to the hardcore fans who overly critique every new album or personal life decision that TR makes. Not everyone will be happy with this album, but read on to find out if it's worth your purchase. *Never listened to NIN before but someone suggested you should? Honestly, this isn't your best place to start. I'm guessing 'The Downward Spiral' would be a nice entry point for you. If you can't stand that, it's probably not in the cards for you with NIN. *Did you used to like NIN back in the 'Pretty Hate Machine'/'The Downward Spiral' radio play heyday but lost touch with NIN? This is also not the best place for you to jump back in. If you jumped out before 'The Fragile', try that. If you bailed back in the day after that one, start your journey back with 'The Slip'. *Longtime fan? Well there's not just one type of us, is there? I remember so many naming 'Piggy' their favorite on TDS and I couldn't understand how one could love that more than 'March of the Pigs'. I like my NIN loud, raw and dirty. I keep seeing the other reviewers comparing this to the 'Broken' EP but I don't see a strong comparison other than album length. Although there is an edgy quality to this EP, it lacks the raw power of 'Broken' so if you're only looking for that sound, you will be disappointed. Now, even though I love "the hard stuff", I also love when TR works within a theme and also makes social/political observations/remarks. That is much more what this EP feels like to me. I feel it has much more in common with 'Year Zero' (which I loved) than 'Broken'. Although, these tracks seem more like a mishmash collection of songs rather than a consistent theme. I do find these tracks to be much more immediately likable and accessible than some of the stuff from years past. I remember hearing 'My Violent Heart' after it was 'leaked' on thumb drives taped to restroom stalls at NIN concerts and was like 'huh?' I grew to appreciate it, but it was initially jarring. Look, in the end, this new NIN which is always appreciated and good to add to your NIN collection, plus we've been promised more. That's all good news. *Do you hate NIN? Yeah, you'll hate this too so just jtfo . I use reviews when I purchase from Amazon so I understand the importance of an honest and insightful review.
