A Fair Comparison vs OLED: A VERY Good 4K TV...Probably The Best Overall
Don't fool yourself by falling for the OLED hype! Samsung still makes a heck of a TV with loads of quality features and beautiful, stunning visuals that, in many ways, outdo OLED. Having owned the much-outdated UN65JU6700F and being relatively not impressed, I was ready to head to the store and throw down at least three times the money on an OLED based on many, many hyped reviews. If you're a realist like me and don't need the ABSOLUTE latest technology to watch Netflix, play some video games, and occasionally watch a Blu-Ray then you might find this helpful if you're looking to buy a new TV. Picture: The picture on this TV is gorgeous. You simply need to see it in person to truly appreciate how stunning it is. I saw it side-by-side with a 65" flat OLED and noticed better color, brighter picture overall and a lot more detail that "popped" out at me. OLED blew this TV away when displaying black picture, and that is one thing this TV does fall behind on as far as the LED/LCD technology. If you don't spend too much time staring at black screens and instead focus on the objects and/or brighter, colorful images that will dominate 80-90% of your viewing experience...this will be a minor complaint. If you're putting this TV into a home theater where you plan to have very little sunlight or artificial lighting, however, I'd say OLED is a better option. This TV is much more suitable for a brighter room or one you'd watch TV in during the daytime. Another thing I really like is the fully-backlit display which helps to minimize edge bleed and accounts for better contrast performance when compared to the edge-lit models. I cannot speak to the HDR as I believe no content was available to really showcase it, but I've read LG has a leg up on Samsung with their Dolby HDR technology...when more content is available for that it might be more of a concern to me. The TV Profile: Having had a curved TV, I do still believe a flat panel looks the best on a wall and showcases the TV's overall incredibly slim profile. I don't mind curved screens and believe they certainly have their place, but for my needs it is a bit of a moot feature. The slim bezel design on this TV is fantastic. Another review compared it to an infinity pool of picture, and I'd have to say that's pretty much what it is. Depending on your mounting preference, this TV can really stylize a room and will look modern and functional at the same time. I'm not a fan of the chrome stand, but I write this review having wall-mounted all of my TV's since my very first LCD back in 2007. Performance: I love the lower input lag on Samsung TV's as it is important for gamers who enjoy some quick-action fighting games and first-person shooters. A casual gamer will not notice this quite as much, but why not limit your input lag as much as possible? LG also has very good input lag figures on their newer TV models, so this is something the OLED didn't suffer from either. As far as the motion flow, the Samsung performed admirably and had a very smooth, stutter-free picture. The quad-core processor is noticeably faster than the earlier models of Samsung UHD TV's and works well in conjunction with the smart functionalities of the TV. For the money you'll save with this TV versus going with the OLED option, I'd say you're getting much more bang for your buck. OLED is the future (at least until the next technology replaces it), but this is a TV that won't break the bank and will deliver some serious firepower for your investment. I'll close by stating this TV is the one I am choosing to purchase. If you're a "new technology" junkie or have a very dark room and need a great TV to perform in low-light conditions (aside from having a lot of expendable income) then I'd say OLED is your best option. Both TV's have their benefits and shortcomings. Cheers!
