My husband is an IT professional and this is what he says: "This 3TB Seagate Personal Cloud Home Media Storage Device allows you to access important files, backup your personal computers, and store media that can be accessed from anywhere on the internet. In this day of information overload, everyone wants access to all of their files everywhere. As a result of this desire, many cloud storage solutions have become available, including offerings from Amazon, Microsoft, and Google. The real issue with cloud storage is that after you have used your free space, additional space can become somewhat expensive. One way of filling this need is to have your very own cloud storage server set up in your house. I myself operate an Ubuntu server that hosts an ownCloud server. I started my use of this Seagate device with a healthy dose of pessimism in place. I found it difficult to believe that this device could replace the server that I had spent hours configuring. In the end, I still have some concerns about future security updates and the durability of the Seagate solution but at this moment, I am hard pressed to find significant fault. I will however, say that the documentation that comes in the box is significantly lacking and that from an IT professional's point of view, I do have some concerns about what methods Seagate uses behind the scenes to provide access. Some of my recommendations include logging in to the device and going to the advanced settings in the device manager. From here, you can turn off services that you will not be using. Disabling these services reduces the likelihood that you will become the victim of someone hacking into your device. I would also recommend that you only add applications to the device that you will actually need. As an example, if it is not your intention to host a personal website using the device, you should not install the WordPress add-in. Also be aware that the Seagate applications may not be up-to-date when compared to the same application running on a true server. Using ownCloud as an example, the current version available from Seagate is ownCloud version 6.0.4 and the current version available from the software vendor is version 8.1.4. In the end, this device handles user account administration and will even send a password recovery email to users who forget their password. It provides a small set of useful applications and also allows for connectivity anywhere on the internet." Hope this review helped you.
