Give it a Chance!
I have never reviewed a product before but I felt this product is being unfairly portrayed and hoped that my comments might help another parent who is on the fence about whether to purchase this device. I was also on the fence after reading some of the negative reviews but I am so glad I got this.
I really think whether or not this works for you depends on the age of the child and what your intended purpose is. My son is 5 1/2 and he is old enough to be taught to swipe the screen to access home page, switch between apps, etc. The interface is not as intuitive as the LeapPad (which he previously had) or even as simple as the Ipad. It may take some teaching to instruct your child how to move between games, books, etc. If this is for a young child this might be frustrating for the child and the parent.
The second aspect people seem to be disappointed with is the FreeTime Unlimited. No, at this time parents cannot filter the content that is available. Although all kid appropriate, it might not be applicable to your child depending on his or her age/gender/etc. When the FreeTime Unlimited is activated your child will be bombarded with a ton of available apps, books, shows. When a child touches an icon, that game or app or show begins to download to the device. Yes, he or she will probably click on everything and fill up the memory very quickly. Also, one must be connected to WiFi to stream movies and TV shows. Here is where the intended purpose of the device comes into play. If you want your child to have a portable movie player/TV then this device might not work for you. From what I have gathered, Kinde FreeTime Unlimited can be compared to a lending library in a sense. Since you are not paying for the app or the movie or the show you are simply "borrowing" it as long as you are connected to WiFi. If you are not connected to WiFi you do not have access to the media. Personally, I did not want my son to sit and watch shows and movies. I want him to read books and play educational apps. The cost of apps and books is so low that I simply disabled FreeTime Unlimited and purchased the specific content I wanted him to have access to. Problem solved. I can still use the FreeTime parental controls to manage his time and content but he doesn't have access to the unlimited library. Would I be annoyed and disappointed if I bought the device because of the FreeTime Unlimited? Absolutely! I did some quick math and if I purchased the HD 7, kid proof case and extended warranty separately I still would've spent more than I did by purchasing the Kids Edition Kindle. From a financial standpoint, I don't feel like I am losing money by not using the one year FreeTime Unlimited subscription.
The case is coloful and sturdy, the device is fast, the sound is awesome, the screen is beautiful, the apps seem to work just fine. I've only had a few days to play around on it but so far I am very pleased with my purchase!
