The New Tarriss Travel Lock - Possibly the finest travel lock of it's kind
I just got my new travel locks from Tarriss. They have changed the form factor into a wider, shorter lock than the older model. Several new ideas are innovative, others are just good sense. I think MOST people buy a TSA lock that looks like a padlock. These are easily damaged, broken or bent. I have had much better luck with the cable locks, like this product has. 1st - the numbered tumblers now use a flat black background with large crisp white numbers. This is a HUGE step forward from the near impossible to read chrome and black tumblers from the old design. 2nd - The numbered tumblers are wider and larger in diameter than the old lock. The larger diameter (16%) allows ease in rotating the individual tumblers and in conjunction with the greatly increased width (48% wider!) allows for much larger numbers. This means they are very easy to read in any lighting circumstance, something the old locks were not. 3rd - The detents (the clicks) are crisp and hold the tumblers firm. This means you know for sure just by looking that all tumblers are not partially rotated preventing you from opening the lock. It also means you are less likely to accidentally rotate an adjoining tumbler when dialing in your combination. 4th - They now have an indicator that changes color if the TSA opens your lock. This is not new, it is new to Tarriss. 5th - They now have a VERY large push button to open the lock after you dial in your combination. 6th - This is another huge improvement over most of the other luggage locks. You do not need to have your lock set to your combination to relock. All you do is take the cable and ferrule and just push it in, on or off of your combination, it will still lock. Too soon to tell: The plastic covering on the Tarriss extends all the way to the ferrule. It may very well be that either through use the steel cable stretches and/or the plastic shrinks. The Tarriss being new I do not know if this will happen to it or not. Hopefully not because it is a lot easier to thread through the zipper's lock holes due to not having the gap the other lock has. Traveling on average 175 days a year, (100% on business) I want the best travel gear I can get. The photographic equipment cases I buy range from $600 to over $1000 and I travel with them all over the world and will have a minimum of 3 and frequently over 10 every time I fly. Even a minor annoyance can cause you issues when traveling. I am looking forward to putting these locks through a test. If they hold up, I feel this Tarriss lock will be the best luggage lock currently on the market. I bought the old style locks in January and I liked everything except for the chrome and back tumblers. I wrote a review telling Tarriss I did not like this because the locks were difficult to open/use and I sent photos showing side by side the problems the chrome tumblers caused. They replied the next day expressing their concerns and agreed that I was right and they were going to look into this issue. And not only did they look into the problem, they fixed it and made a better lock all the way around. It is nice to know some companies listen. It is really nice to see some also act. Tarriss did both really well.
