Sooooo good. I'm hooked!
I had been buying Katsuo Fumi Furikake pretty consistently over the last three or four years cause its the only flavor I knew existed. When I saw they make all these other flavors I was blown away. Most of them are really good. No one seems to have done a breakdown of the flavors so I will do my best, I'm no expert but I have essentially been binging on these the last few days. Katsuo - This is essentially the base ingredients for all the other flavors except Shiso. Bonito flakes, seaweed, sesame seeds. If you don't like this flavor, chances are you won't like the rest, so if you are new to Furikake, start with this one by istelf first. Salmon - Dried salmon bits which taste similar to roasted salmon skin. Pretty nice flavor, not too fishy. A more complex and delicate flavor over the Ebi. Ebi Fumi - Shrimp flavor. Kinda reminds me of shrimp ramen. Pretty good by itself on rice, the salmon has better taste as far as the fish flavors. If you like Japanese fish snack, this one is similar in taste. Seto - Potato and soy sauce flavor. A bit like a sweet potato. Moritamago - sweet egg flavor. similar to tamago(ommelete) sushi. I made fried eggs over toast this morning and put this on. It was great. Wasabi Fumi - Wasabi(japanese horseradish) flavor. Not too spicy. If you love sushi, this over rice with some soy sauce sprinkled is perfect. Also used this as a seasoning on salmon I broiled last night. The spice dries out quick if cooked in an oven, so mixing with butter and lemon juice ahead of time maintains its moisture throughout cooking. Nori Fumi - Extra seaweed. Very distinct seaweed flavor, if you like sushi hand rolls this is a good choice. I put it on a salad and it went nicely. Shiso - This is the only one i truly did not like. It contains dried beefsteak plant which tasted very potent, bitter and salty. Prehaps I didn't use it properly or contrast it enough with the right type of food, but it kind of reminded me of a non edible potpourri. I will keep experimenting, but I expect this one to stay in the back of my cabinet untouched.
