Fantastic as luggage or airline transport.
This review is for the black Pelican Air 1615 case with no foam. I have owned at least 50 Pelican cases. This case retains all the traditional Pelican case attributes- strength, durability, lifetime guarantee; but at much less weight than their former methods of construction. The airline baggage handlers have had this case on 27 USA domestic flights so far, totaling 43,500 miles, plus 4 international flights of 10,000 miles with just minor scuffs to the case, and with no damage to the contents. (I recently gave this case to a friend who often travels domestically for work, he recently told me he put another 80,000 - 100,000 domestic air miles on this case in about 6 months and it's holding up just fine.) In this product Pelican has achieved the perfect balance between cutting weight and yet retaining strength and content protection. Also, the case pulls very easily when loaded to 50 pounds total weight. USAGE TIP#1: I recommend placing a paper towel soaked in WD-40 over old baggage stickers on this case to remove the old stickers and adhesive residue. Let it soak overnight, then remove the label using an old credit card or cheap plastic scraper from a hardware/paint supply store. USAGE TIP#2: Also I take the Pelican stickers off my cases used for airline transport, whether for domestic or international travel. I believe this reduces the odds of theft or pilferage of the case by thieves looking for high dollar electronics or other valuables.(I then tape the Pelican sticker that lists the model of the case to the inside lid of the case, which then gives me a simple reminder of the model number of that particular case.) USAGE TIP#3 Finally, I only buy black Pelican cases for airline transport because I want each case to blend in as much as possible with other airline luggage. This is my informal "gray man" approach to airline luggage. For example, I have an upcoming civilian tourist trip planned to the Middle East and possibly also to Africa. I would never take a desert tan or olive green pelican case on such a trip, as it could instantly visually mark me and the case for increased scrutiny, and as a target for luggage theft, physical harassment, or attack. Consequently, I will simply take my black Pelican cases with the outside Pelican labels removed on that trip. I anticipate no problems with my luggage, or because of my luggage, using these simple precautions.
