Dehydrated food made our way...
We were starting to purchase more and more prepackaged dried food, fruit and jerky, from the grocery store and decided it would be in our better interest to buy a dehydrator. After spending some time shopping online and reading various reviews we came across this one and decided to buy it. The fruit that we dehydrate is now to the state that we'd like to have it, not rock hard like store bought. When drying bananas, for example, it does take closer to the maximum length stated in the owner's manual for them to not be soft and bendable. Based on our experience with drying fruit, it is best to have it slightly dryer than you'd like to have it prior to storage, as they will soften a little once stored. When making fruit leather it is best to not overfill the fruit roll sheets and to keep to the measurements stated in the recipes. Using a cooking spray prior to putting your puree onto the fruit roll sheets is a must; otherwise it will stick and is not easy to remove the dried fruit leather. Making meat jerky is relatively easy and can be done using ingredients found in most pantries. We have yet to purchase any ingredients that we don't already have and have just substituted with other things. For example, sea salt and some BBQ sauce instead of hickory smoke-flavored salt. Cleaning the dehydrator is made easier when you allow it to soak for about 10 minutes in soapy warm water and then using a scrub brush to clean it. Overall, this has been a good purchase for our dried foods and we, as well as our extended family, has enjoyed the various snacks we've dehydrated.
