Champion 4 Blue Ring replacement
Cannot use any form of bleach or cleaning tablets in the back "hopper" of any toilet, but especially the Champion 4. It will eventually "leak" from the water reservoir into the bowl, and you will hear the dreaded "ghost flush". Suddenly, it'll sound like the toilet flushes itself. I have three Champion 4s in my house, and 2 of three have leaked and ghost flushed without even using cleaners in the back water. If you unscrew the plastic thumb nut on the green dome, you will free up the blue ring, which is the culprit. This kit contains the blue ring, and the little brown rubber o-ring that is on the stem of the thumb nut (you'll see it when you take it off). If either of these leaks, ghost flush. Interestingly, and I'm sure you see the same thing, the blue ring will likely look fine--no kinks, wear spots, etc. Mine was the same way, but still, once you replace it, the issue will be fixed. The flushing by a friendly ghost is from water seeping around the blue ring and into the toilet bowl, and when it gets low enough, it trips the refill lever and the back reservoir fills itself again. One could test this, if not sure, by placing food coloring in the back reservoir tank and not flushing anything and come back in a half hour or so; if the coloring is in the toilet bowl now, it's the blue ring (or the tiny brown gasket on the thumb screw) that is leaking. This kit solved my issue. It comes with instructions. I bought an extra one for when my next Champion 4 leaks. This is a common issue with the Champion toilets. I have no clue if this fits Champion 1, 2 or 3 models. American Standard will send you the blue ring for free as part of the ten year bumper to bumper warranty on the Champ4s. It'll take ten days to get to your home, so if you have no need for the toilet in the meantime and shut off the water valve from the wall (or don't mind a water bill from hell for all the ghost flushes), then you can just call them and they are exceedingly helpful and just send it out with a phone call. I was not registered for warranty, and lost my sales receipt and they still gave me no hassles (b/c the Champ4 has only been out since 2008, so they know it's still within ten years--plus the blue ring failure is legendary and infamous). If you're reading this, your blue ring has already failed, so you can buy this one (like I did to get it in two days), and just have AS send you a factory one (exactly the same as this one) for free for the next time it craps out in 12-24 months. Cheers. I do not know the American Standard number, but it's online and on the product info sheets that came with the john.
