A Timeless Classic Optimized For Your Kindle Tablet
Being that I am a huge fan of this game itself, when I found out they were releasing an version specifically designed for Kindle Fire tablets, I was bursting with glee! Yet perhaps the biggest question on your mind (if you're reading this review) is does it work? Functionality/Gameplay (9/10): Ouch, it really hurt me to take off a point in the ratings here, but that is because it's not absolutely perfectly smooth. Yes, it's smooth (don't get me wrong), but veterans of this game will be able to notice a difference here. Yet if your new to this game or just looking for a quick and fun way to pass the time, then it does a fantastic job for what it is. Gameplay? I mean...come on...it's Pac-Man. According to the 2010 Gamer's Edition of the Guinness book of world records, Pac-Man won the distinction of being the most recognizable video game character of all time. Why is that important? Well if the game wasn't good...nobody would know who or what Pac-Man was. So that should speak for itself! Bottom line, the gameplay is spectacular with an insane amount of replay value (gotta beat that high score)! Sound (8/10): Had to shave off a few points here. All the classic and retro sounds from the arcade game are here, except something seems a bit off. It's no big deal at all, but it just seems like the audio isn't completely synced properly. If this were the type of game where there were characters that spoke and their lips had to move and the audio wasn't synced up properly, then yes, I'd be annoyed. However this is just a pie shaped being eating a bunch of yellow dots and being chased/chasing ghosts, so sound effects aren't necessarily the big selling point here (although the game is renowned for it's classic "waka-waka-waka" sound). Aside from the syncing issue (which also could just be me), everything audio wise is great (plus you can turn the volume all the way down if need be to where no sound is emitted at all). Controls (8/10): To be honest...I was impressed in this department. To me, Pac-Man is a game that BEGS to be played with a joystick of some kind, and to not actually "feel" the physical touch of a joystick itself...it just makes things seem a bit "off." However, this app does a really good job in making things as smooth as possible. There are two options here, a "flick" option where you just flick in the direction that you wish Pac-Man to travel, and then a sort of artificial/digital joystick where you can slide in the direction you wish Pac-Man to go (kind of like the sweep feature when texting/typing). The response is surprisingly smooth and I was able to beat the first several levels with ease. Graphics (10/10): This was very impressive to me here. Obviously you know what you're getting into here as far as the retro Pac-Man look is concerned, yet the colors really stand out beautifully on the Fire's screen. To be quite honest, this might be the best I've seen Pac-Man...(even better than on my Namco Essentials version for Playstation 3). So if you're looking for some good ole fashioned eye candy, then this is definitely a really good port of the game. Overall Score: (35/40) Q. Should you purchase this? A. Absolutely! I see no reason why not (especially if you're a fan of the game already). Like I said, I was really excited when i found out it was released for the Fire, and after having played it for a while, I can say I am still very pleased. Whether you are a serious gamer or just looking to pass some time, I highly recommend you add this to your Kindle app collection! If you have any questions, feel free to add them to the comments! Hope this helps! :) Update 12/14/2012: Everything is still running smoothly, and I have to say that I'm extremely pleased with this purchase. For the price, this game is a GREAT value! Seriously, what are you waiting for?!
