Killed a huge rat in only a day and half since purchasing. This thing WORKS.
I have a huge rat problem going on... They are in the crawl space above my kitchen having a grand ol' time and living quite comfortably. I didnt notice the screen covers on the vents have holes in them and they just climb the stucco to get up there - this was pointed out to me by a pest control inspector. Worst of all there is no way for a person to access this area to get them out, nor poison them and have them die up there, potentially.
But it doesnt end there. They are all over my yard as well and destroying my garden. I didn't want to resort to something as extreme and cruel as this, but I spend months and months on my vegetable gardens and the only one's benefitting and eating the delicious veggies are these little f&^rs.
Yes, I have tried it all:
• Ultrasonic plug specifically for rodents - Ive had it for months and they are still running laps up in that crawl space.
* The silly solar devices that emit high frequencies sound/flashing lights for the yard- dont work and just annoy me.
* Hot pepper spray - nope
• Peppermint spray / mint in general - nope
* cat litter - felt really strange purposely throwing my cat's litter around my yard / edge of the canyon where I live... and now I feel dumb doing such a gross thing for no point
• enclosing my crops in a fence of plastic I thought they couldnt climb. They are so crafty... I have no idea how they get through everything.
Basically what prompted going this route was that my cat recently caught two in one day in the bushes of my yard - finally giving me the hard evidence of the rats out there. I called pest control and the rep quoted $350 for a 1 month monitoring with bait traps to capture - no poison, again for the reason stated above that they might go into walls / crawl space and die and smell terrible. Oh and no guarantee on catching anything. Seriously? $350 for *maybe* some success? I might as well spend $40 for *maybe* some success with my own trap and if it doesnt work, return it.
Can anything speak louder than a photo of a giant dead rat in this device? I don't think so. I can't believe it. I set it up Saturday afternoon... no luck that first night (might has been my bait choice and/or location), then moving to the edge of a wall facing the bush my cat caught one in and putting the bit of peanut butter on the wall of the back, and bam, this morning I look out and see the little feet hanging out the front entrance. Im an animal lover but after what I have been through..seeing that felt like christmas to me.
Few Tips:
• Use gloves when handling it so you dont get your scent on it.
• Put a wet sponge in front of the entrance so its a wet electrocuting and more effective
• Use peanut butter on the back of the wall like they say to. I have read several replies to reviews by the manufacturer that putting items in the bottom can mess up the sensor and create a false shock..I had put a bit of a nut / dried fruit / chocolate chip mixture the first night and the next day it definitely seemed something successfully walked in there and wasnt killed (mud tracks)
*Says for indoor use only but I am keeping on my patio where it won't get wet and it think its fine. so far so good anyway.
Thats about it... I mean I can't believe it worked nearly instantly. Im hoping the family living above my kitchen slowly makes its way out and eventually I can staple gun metal sheeting over the hole they are accessing. I also hope the rats don't get wise to this device...they are so intelligent and highly skeptical.
If you reach a level of desperation like I did, I can tell you that this is worth the money and having faith. I thought it was buggy and was planning to return, esp. with mixed reviews and no luck the first night... then, well, look at the photo!!! :D
GOOD LUCK.
