This bed is awesome! The Egg shell foam insert is nice and thick, the outer cover has a soft side to keep pets warm during the Winter, and the other side will keep them cool in the Summer. The outer cover is simple to wash! I've had to wash mine already because my dog got into the trash and got gunk all over his bed , which I found when I got home from work, not sure how long it sat there on his bed , but I work 8 hours, I put it straight into the washer, and it came clean without any issues, Put the foam back in with out any problems (Foam is not washable), and it's back to being ''fought over" The cats keep staring my dog down when he's on it, to make him uncomfortable and get off it so they can take it, Or they just come up to him and smack him a few times and make him run off so they can steal his bed - they all have their own beds, but you know nothing is better than the one someone else is already using! I highly recommend this bed no matter the age of your pet, Mine is 4 1/2 and this bed is roughly 3" thick, he is about 21" high, so he just steps right on and off it, so as long as it doesn't get torn up by the time he gets to the stage of having issues getting up and down, this bed will be there for him, and he shouldn't have any issues getting in or out of it.
