It's all about CRI
It's all about CRI I bought these LED bulbs at Costco, not Amazon, but the packaging looks identical to the current picture. For me, while the energy efficiency of CFL and LED lightbulbs has huge appeal, I hate the faded "institutional" light that many of them give out. Most LED manufacturers quote their color temperatures prominently, and give you the impression that a lower color temperature will give you "warm" light. My experience runs counter this: To me, some of the 2400K and 2700K bulbs that I bought give a "faded" or "pale", "washed-out" light (putting those words in quotes, because it's hard to describe the exact feeling that I get from that light) - basically nothing remotely resembling "warm," in my opinion. The real issue appears to be the CRI (Color-rendering index) - i.e., how well the light actual reveals colors in objects. Most LED and CFL bulbs generate light in very small portions of the spectrum. Because objects lit up by them can only reflect the frequencies that the bulb generates in the first place, this can severely wash out the colors, despite the fact that a room may actually be quite brightly lit. I'm probably more sensitive to this than most, but to me it just results in a very unpleasant "atmosphere" in the room (my wife complains about this too, perhaps even more than I do). In any case, I've discovered that all of the bulbs I buy that aren't labelled as high CRI seem to have this issue. So far these FEIT bulbs (with their supposed 92 CRI) have been some of the best. The colors they generate aren't quite as warm as incandescent bulbs (I still prefer the overall look), but they are much, much better than the typical bulb. I would truly use these as a substitute for my incandescents, where the other bulbs would get relegated to the workshop, where I can put up with harsher light. For what it's worth, the other bulb that I like is a CREE bulb that was also marked as high CRI.
