Perfect for horizontal sliding windows
The apartment I'm renting has horizontal sliding windows and doesn't allow me to mount a compressor outside which rules out split ACs. Regular window ACs are built for vertical sliding windows and it's not easy to secure them without outside support which I'm not allowed to mount. There's a YouTube video showing how to do it, but it didn't feel safe with cats in the house. They also block a large part of the window, reducing room lighting. Portable ACs have the compressor inside the house (inefficient, noisy and take up space) and require ugly tubes to vent hot air outside. This one solves all of those problems: - the compressor is outside so it's less noisy (though it's a metal box so you will still hear it) - it securely balances without any extra support just by its weight distribution and screw-in dividers - doesn't take up room space - doesn't take up much window space (about a finger in height) - no ugly tubes - looks quite nice in the window and isn't jarring as regular ACs To seal off the top part of the window I got a $30 clear plexiglass (acrylic plastic). Ace hardware cut it to size for free. Given the disadvantages of portable and regular window ACs you would have thought something like this would have been invented by 2020. EDIT: on a very hot and humid day (96*F / 36*C) I started to get FL errors. The condensation tank is full. It averages 4-6 lb water per day. You either put a pot underneath or you empty it out every 1-2 lb when you notice the FL error (I don't know what the capacity of the tank is). On less hot / humid days I didn't notice the tank getting full, but I didn't pay much attention (I'll update the review).
