Throw away the filters... you don't need them.
This is the third water fountain bowl I've owned, and I think this one is the best design. The first one was ceramic. It was difficult to clean due to its weight. The second one was plastic, but I believe this one gave my cat a rash around her mouth. However, it was much easier to clean. The stainless-steel bowl seems to combine the best of both without the drawbacks of either. This bowl also has what looks like a UV LED built into the pump. There’s no mention of this in the product description, and I'll I can tell you is, it's blue light. If it is a UV light, it’s not really bright/strong enough to help eliminate bacterial growth in the bowl. If it's not a UV light, then it's meant to just give the bowl some added visual appeal. But I will say having a real UV light inside the bowl would be bonus. If you find a bowl advertising this feature, maybe consider it over this one. Lastly, I’d like to talk about the filters of this and pretty much every water fountain bowl out there…. The point being – They cause more problems than they solve!!! Charcoal is suited to removing things such as metals and minerals from the water. The filters for these bowls are NOT designed in such a way they can efficiently remove these kinds of contaminants from the water. They are not like the filters in your favorite water pitcher. The only thing these filters do well is, they provide a medium where bacteria can grow. This is exactly what you don’t want. If your tap water is so bad that you feel you need to run it through a charcoal filter, you’re better off buying a water filter pitcher, bottled water, or some other water filtration system. Either way, you need to START with filtered water in the bowl. Filters can slow down the water flow of the fountain. My last two bowls had in-line filters that forced the water through. The design of this bowl is different where gravity has to pull the water through. My fear with this design is, if the filter slows the water down too much, the top of the bowl can actually overflow. Aside from nasty tap water, your cat(s) (and probably dogs too) will contaminate the water anyway just by drinking out of it. If they like to drink after eating, they will most certainly get bits of food in the bowl. The filters might catch this stuff, but again… it only serves to feed bacteria. Just like any water dish, you’re going to have to clean this, and any other water fountain regularly.
